Advantages and Disadvantages of Bus Topology

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Bus Topology are as follows. So let us check out points on advantages and disadvantages to know more about bus topology. It is a type of topology for a local area network (LAN) in which all the nodes are connected to a single cable. The cable through which nodes are connected is knows as "backbone", if it breaks then the entire sement may fail. Bus topology consists of main run of a cable with a terminator at each end.

Advantages of Bus Topology are:

  1. In bus topology least cables are required compared to other types of topology.
  2. Bus topology is cost effective.
  3. It is easy to understand and it is preferred for small metworks.
  4. Bus topology is easy to expand by joining two cables together.
  5. Bus topology is well suited for quick setup or temporary networks.
  6. It is one of the cheapest topology to implement.
  7. Any specialized equipment is not required for bus topology.
  8. It us popular among other topologies as it is easy to install and cheaper than other topologies.

Disadvantages of Bus Topology are:

  1. Bus topology is slower than the ring topology.
  2. The length of cables in bus topology is limited.
  3. If the cables fails in bus topology then the entire network fails.
  4. The performance of the network decreases if the nodes are more or the network traffic is heavy.
  5. Difficult to troubleshoot.
  6. Network disruption can be seen when computers are removed or added.

Other types of topology are star topology, tree topology, mesh topology, ring topology, hybrid topology, network topology, point to point topology and fully connected topology

Advantages and Disadvantages of Star Topology

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Star Topology are as follows. So let us find out some points on advantages and disadvantages to know more about star topology. Star topology is a topology for LAN - Local Area Network in which all nodes are connected individually to a central connection point known as hub or a switch. Many home network uses star topology. It requires more cables compared to bus topology. Some of the points on star topology are listed below.
