Advantages and Disadvantages of Star Topology

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Star Topology are as follows. So let us find out some points on advantages and disadvantages to know more about star topology. Star topology is a topology for LAN - Local Area Network in which all nodes are connected individually to a central connection point known as hub or a switch. Many home network uses star topology. It requires more cables compared to bus topology. Some of the points on star topology are listed below.

Advantages of star Topology are:

  1. In star topology if any of the cable or node fails then the other nodes are not affected.
  2. Star topology is easy to maintain and install.
  3. In star topology new nodes can easily be removed as well as added from the central hub without affecting any network.
  4. Improved network performance can be seen in star topology, Hop count of three.
  5. Star topology is more scalable compared to ring network or peer-to-peer network.
  6. In star topology problem with one node does not affect other nodes.
  7. More computers can be added without disruption in star topology.
  8. If a cable failes it will only affect just one workstation.
  9. Easy to detect faults and the parts can be changed easily.
  10. Star topology is easy to expand than ring or bus topology.

Disadvantages of Star Topology are:

  1. Sometimes star topology becomes costly as it requires more network than any other topologies.
  2. In star topology the entire network depends on the central hub and if the hub fails then entire network breakes down.
  3. Start topology creates a single point of failure.
  4. There is no route redundance in star topology
  5. Star topology requires more cable to connect networks.
  6. The cost of the concentrators or hub is high.

Other types of topology are bus topology, ring topology, tree topology, mesh topology, network topology, hybrid topology, point to point topology and fully connected topology.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Bus Topology

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Bus Topology are as follows. So let us check out points on advantages and disadvantages to know more about bus topology. It is a type of topology for a local area network (LAN) in which all the nodes are connected to a single cable. The cable through which nodes are connected is knows as "backbone", if it breaks then the entire sement may fail. Bus topology consists of main run of a cable with a terminator at each end.
